THE OPERATION:
The classic abdominoplasty entails making an incision in the groin with an extension from hip to hip. There is also a new opening for the navel. The abdominal wall is tightened and the excess skin and fat is removed. Drains are inserted.
POST-OP COURSE:
A garment is worn for 2-3 weeks. The drains are usually removed in 3-7 days and, although most stitches are dissolvable, there will be some that have to be removed in 1 week. Most patients may return to non-strenuous work within 1-2 weeks
COMPLICATIONS:
The abdomen will feel numb for 6-12 months. One has to accept a rather long scar, although it is usually in the bikini area. The scar may thicken and may require treatment, which your surgeon will review with you. Bleeding and infection are also possible but are not common. There may be skin separation, which is usually minor. The most serious complication is a clot to the lung, which is very serious and requires hospitalization. This is very rare, provided certain measures are taken which your surgeon will review with you. The most important measure is to get out of bed as soon as possible and be mobile.
